Tracks on Tracks is a magazine about all the ways music flows through our lives.

It’s distributed by email (and in the Substack app), one short, stylish essay at a time.

Each essay features one person — either Peter C. Baker (that’s me) or a guest writer I admire — articulating their relationship to one song. Some of these essays dwell on an isolated moment in time; others cover years.

Occasionally, I’ll also run interviews with musicians about their relationships to single songs.

I started this project because I love writing about music.

I’ve been a freelance writer for over a decade. Some of the assignments I’ve enjoyed most have been about music and how people connect to it. But the ongoing contraction of professional opportunities for writers of all kinds has made these rewarding assignments harder to come by. So here I am, making my own thing, seeing what happens.

This requires your help.

For now, all subscribers — paid and unpaid — receive every essay, get access to the archive, and are allowed to make comments. I’m hopeful that the comment threads will become a place where readers enjoy sharing reflections on music and life.

Soon, though, I’ll start experimenting with different divisions between what I offer to paying and non-paying readers. The amount of subscription revenue I can generate will determine what the project looks like going forward, my ability to keep commissioning guest writers, etc.
